About the museum
Arbeidermuseet is a branch of Oslo Museum and opened in Sagene in 2013. The museum presents the industrial and working-class history along the Akerselva river, an area that was central to Norwegian industrial development from the 1840s. Oslo Museum wants the site to be a natural meeting point for walks along the river, with permanent and changing exhibitions on life along the Akerselva and the city's working-class culture.
The museum is housed in Apotekergården at Sagveien 28, a brick building from 1869–70 that was built for the pharmacist Nicolai Lindgaard.
The main exhibition “Fabrikkjenter og industriherrer” (Factory Girls and Industrial Masters) tells the story of industrialisation along the river from the mid-1840s. In addition, Oslo Museum offers guided tours of Brænna at Sagveien 8, a three-storey wooden house from 1848 that was built as workers' housing for Graahs spinneri (Graah's spinning mill). A 21-square-metre flat there is furnished as it may have looked around 1920.
