About the museum
Eydehavnmuseet tells the story of industrial and working-class history in Eydehavn, an area that is today protected as a special cultural heritage area (antikvarisk spesialområde). Between 1913 and 1916 twelve brick houses were built as homes for the employees of Det Norske Nitridaktieselskap, known as Nitriden. The houses were considered very modern for their time, with electric light and toilets in the basement.
Nitriden closed in 1975, and Moland municipality took over the housing. In 1982 a four-family house was converted into a museum. The ground floor presents the major companies Arendal Smelteverk and Nitriden and the local community that grew up around them. On the first floor there is a workers' flat from the 1920s, a room with old union banners, the exhibition “Marens minner” (Maren's Memories) on women's work along the coast, and a room about the entrepreneur Sam Eyde. The basement has a photo exhibition about the converter station at Nitriden and prints by Else Hagen.
The museum is a branch of Aust-Agder museum og arkiv. Arendal municipality provides annual operating support and owns the building, and the board has representatives from the municipality and Stokken historielag (Stokken Local History Society). The museum also offers historical walks, including along the canals in the forest at Eydehavn.
