About the museum

Kløckers hus is located on Tyholmen, the old district of Arendal, and shows how a prosperous city-dwelling family lived in the 19th century. The site has been built on since the 1670s, but the house took its present form when Johannes Nicolai de Kløcker became royal customs inspector in Arendal in 1824 and had the Empire-style façade erected in 1826. Older parts of the house date from the 1600s and the 18th century.

The Kløcker family owned the house for four generations, until Stiftelsen Kløckers hus – Arendal bymuseum (Kløckers House Foundation – Arendal City Museum) took it over in 1982 and made it a museum. The building was listed in 1984. On the first floor the rooms are furnished as a wealthy townhouse could have looked in the city's heyday, including furnishings from the Fürst family, and there is also a section with a seamen's home.

On the ground floor there is an old country store with fittings from a closed shop, which also serves as reception and sells traditional sweets (bolsjer). The second floor has a large hall and a collection of ship-in-a-bottle models, regarded as the world's largest and made by Kjell Birkeland. In the stable stands a landau from around 1870.
