About the museum
Fjell festning on Sotra in Øygarden municipality is a German coastal battery from the Second World War, built by the Organisation Todt and known as Marine-Artilleriebatterie 11./504 Fjell. The installation has a gun tower with three 28 cm guns. After the war it was part of the coastal artillery structure as Fjell fort, and it was decommissioned as a military installation in 1968.
The site is regarded as one of the most important military-historical heritage sites in Vestlandet and lies in a large and varied nature and recreation area that stretches from Haganes to Bildøybakken. The gun tower, the underground main installation and the toilet building are owned by Stiftinga Fjell festning, while the municipality owns part of the surrounding properties.
Volunteers keep the café in the gun tower open most Saturdays and Sundays, and guided tours of the installation are arranged. From the gun tower there is a wide view to the west. The area has many trench lines and bunkers, and all movement takes place at your own risk.
