About the museum
Alvøen Hovedbygning offers glimpses of the Fasmer family's life in Bergen and at Alvøen over more than 300 years. The family bought the place in the mid-1700s, started paper production in 1797 and ran the factory until it closed in 1981. The main building was the family's year-round home from 1808.
The Alvøen setting, with the manor farm, a cluster of small West Norwegian workers' houses and the director's residence, is an authentic industrial site. It had a school, savings bank, library and assembly hall for the workers. The beautiful 18th-century garden and the large English park are open to the public all year round, and in the forest behind the manor farm stands Stuart Frost's artwork. The house is today open to groups and events.
