About the museum

Hiltahuset is the oldest main house on Røvær, half an hour by boat from Haugesund, and today it serves as the island's museum. The construction suggests that the house was built around 1820–1830 from two older rooms (stuer), with a hall (gang) and kitchen in the middle.

The house was built as a main house and later served as a kårhus (retirement house). In the 1880s one of the rooms was for periods used as a schoolroom. The property was passed down from mother to daughter through oral agreements over several generations, and the house is named after Johan Hilt from Bergen, who married one of the daughters. Until around 1960 it was used as a holiday home.

Today the house has been restored and furnished with objects and fittings that show the way of living and building on Røvær. One of the rooms has an exhibition on the Røvær disaster of 1899. Hiltahuset is open on Thursdays and Sundays in the summer holidays and is part of Haugalandmuseet.
