About the museum
Høyanger Industristadsmuseet opened on 21 June 1997 in Byporten in the centre of Høyanger. Einar Førde gave the opening speech, and cultural director Sverre Erdal was an important driving force behind the establishment. The museum marked its 20th anniversary in 2017.
On the ground floor the exhibition follows the town’s development from a farming community in the early 20th century to an industrial town, and a film is shown. The first floor is about social history: daily life, housing conditions, culture, the war and the labour movement. The permanent exhibition also includes models at a scale of 1:50 of the old Sæbøtangen and Samvirkekvartalet, made by Arild Høyvik, which show buildings that were demolished in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
On the first floor is also Gunnar S. Galleriet, with paintings by Gunnar S. Gundersen. In Byporten you will also find tourist information and a public library, and there is a small shop with books, postcards, pin badges and posters.
