About the museum
Eikaasgalleriet lies by Jølstravatnet along the E39 at Vassenden in Sunnfjord. Here you can see much of the art that Ludvig Eikaas (1920–2010) created, which is otherwise found in Copenhagen, New York, Paris, Florence and art museums in Norway. Eikaas was a printmaker, painter, draughtsman and sculptor, and is regarded as a pioneer of modernism in Norway from the late 1940s. He was among the first to use hard plastic in sculpture.
The collection comprises over 850 works, and a third of them are portraits, almost 70 of them self-portraits. The gallery shows changing exhibitions from the collection. Eikaas was married to the textile artist Synnøve Anker Aurdal and was first a professor and later rector at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. The gallery is part of Musea i Sogn og Fjordane.
