About the museum
IBSEN Museum & Teater is located at Henrik Ibsens gate 26 in Oslo, in the house where Henrik Ibsen lived for the last eleven years of his life. He had lived much of his life abroad, but returned to Norway in 1891. He lived with his wife Suzannah at Arbins gate 1, and it was there that he wrote his last two plays.
The flat has been restored to Ibsen's time, with the poet's own furniture and fittings and original colours and decoration. Visitors join a guided tour of the flat, which starts every full hour, and get a look behind the façade of the ageing poet. The guided tour is included in the ticket.
In addition to the flat, the museum has the exhibition “Jeg spørger helst” (I Prefer to Ask), which presents Ibsen's life and works in a close and unusual way. The house functions as a cultural centre with a theatre stage, a museum shop, offers for schools and rooms for hire, and it produces the podcast Ibsens salong (Ibsen's Salon). The museum is part of Stiftelsen Norsk Folkemuseum.
