About the museum

Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum was founded by a number of prominent figures in the organisations that made up the Home Front (Hjemmefronten), both civilian and military. They wanted to strengthen the will to protect national freedom and to build strong support for democratic values. The museum sits on top of Akershus Fortress and has been run by the Armed Forces (Forsvaret) since 1995.

The museum is to increase knowledge of the occupation years through the collection, management and dissemination of objects, images and documents. A large archive collection documents the history of the resistance from 1940 to 1945. The collection comprises around 5,000 objects, such as handguns, communication and sabotage equipment, uniforms, banners and flags, as well as period objects from civilian everyday life. The photo collection has around 40,000 images from the occupation years.

The main exhibition extends over two floors. The museum also has a reading room, archive and library with over 600 shelf metres of private and public archives from the Second World War, as well as printed matter from and about the occupation. The museum is part of Forsvarshistorisk museum (the Armed Forces Historical Museum).
