About the museum
Iveland is an internationally known mineral municipality. The mountains consist of amphibolite about a billion years old, cut through by pegmatite veins with quartz, feldspar and mica. Feldspar was extracted and sold to the porcelain industry in several European countries, and quartz was used for ferrosilicon. The mining produced finds of around 115 different minerals, among them rare minerals with elements such as beryllium and yttrium.
In 2013 Iveland municipality bought a number of minerals from the collector Gunnar Helvik Hansen. All of them come from the Evje and Iveland area and form the core of the exhibition. The mineral exhibition was opened on 25 March 2015 in the new town-centre building Åkle, with the mayor Gro-Anita Mykjåland giving the official opening.
The exhibition shows local minerals, and at the entrance stands a glass cabinet with a selection and a local history. An audio guide of about 15 minutes, launched in July 2025, gives a short introduction to the history of the minerals. The municipality has produced 27-page brochures in Norwegian, English, German and Dutch, which are handed out free at Åkle.
