About the museum
The museum lies in the mountain-farm settlement of Kittilbu in Gausdal Vestfjell, surrounded by wetland areas, and is also the visitor centre for Langsua nasjonalpark. After the Storting granted a licence for hydropower development in Dokkfløy in 1985, three years of archaeological excavations followed, which produced new knowledge about how the area was used through the ages.
The exhibition deals with older cultural history, with an emphasis on finds from settlement sites of the Early Stone Age, iron production and elk hunting in the Iron Age and Middle Ages in the Dokkfløy–Langsua area. More than a thousand elk pits bear witness to extensive elk hunting. Iron was extracted from bog iron ore from the Early Iron Age, and today iron is still produced at Kittilbu for research and education.
The museum owns Volden seter (mountain summer farm) from the 1860s, which looks roughly as the dairymaid (budeia) left it around 1940, and it offers mountain summer farm experiences. There is also a culture trail (kultursti) and a nature trail (natursti) with bird hides. The museum is run by Randsfjordmuseet and is a certified eco-tourism business. A new exhibition and expansion are being planned.
