About the museum
Museet Gamle Vossebanen is run by Norsk Jernbaneklubb (NJK), a voluntary, non-profit museum organisation that preserves locomotives and carriages to show technical and cultural development. The line has been restored with more than 203 person-years of volunteer work by the club’s members from 1981 to 2011 and since then. The heritage railway follows the 18-kilometre route between Garnes station and Midttun station along Sørfjorden, Haukelandsvannet, Søylevannet and Grimevannet, and is described as Norway’s only preserved heritage railway on a main line with a steam locomotive, a dining car and teak carriages.
The trains are pulled by a steam locomotive or by the BM 86 railcar from 1950. Garnes station is the museum’s main station, and here there is a separate museum exhibition, a station café and a souvenir outlet. On selected Sundays the classic dining car from 1937 runs.
