About the museum
Norsk Farmasihistorisk Museum was founded on 2 May 1963, when it took over the pharmaceutical collections of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo. The museum has its own board, but operational responsibility and administration lie with Norsk Folkemuseum. Since 1974 it has been housed in the Generalitetsgården at Bygdøy, and there is also a membership association.
The building was erected in Kristiania in 1714 by the merchant Tøger Eriksen Grøn, became the official residence of the commanding general in the 18th century, and was moved to Norsk Folkemuseum in 1928. It has never housed a working pharmacy, but it is representative of a building type in which a town pharmacy could have been located in the 18th and 19th centuries. A medicinal herb garden lies beside the building.
The exhibitions show the development of pharmacies in Norway from the first pharmacy licence in 1595 up to the 20th century. Among the permanent exhibits are the dispensaries (sales rooms) from Apoteket Hjorten from 1860 and Skillebekk apotek from 1960, and in the laboratory from Frogner apotek old techniques are demonstrated. On level 2 (first floor) there is a large store of materials and herbs.
