About the museum
Norsk skogfinsk museum was established in December 2005, when four older heritage organisations working on Forest Finnish history and culture were merged: Gruetunet museum and Finnetunet (both from 1942), Austmarka historielag (from 1977) and Åsnes Finnskog historielag (from 1990). The original sites are still run as separate visitor attractions, and volunteers in the local branches are of great importance to the museum.
The main site is Museet på Svullrya in Grue Finnskog, which is open all year with exhibitions, a museum shop and a cafeteria. The new museum building came out of an open international architectural competition organised by the Norwegian Association of Architects (Norske arkitekters landsforbund) in 2017 and 2018, in which the jury received 203 proposals from 17 countries. The winners were Hanna Johansson, Juras Lasovsky and Filip Lipinski. The building has a facade of malmfuru and a floor of solid spruce, and it was built with around 380 pine posts.
The outdoor area has a small slash-and-burn rye field (svedjerug), the artwork “Den pratende steinen” (The Talking Stone) and a smoke sauna in the forest along the Rotna. The museum also includes Finnetunet, Åsta Holth-museet, Finnskoghagen at Leiråker, Gruetunet museum and the farm Orala at Varaldskogen. In summer the museum offers experiences for both adults and children.
