About the museum
Oseana art and culture centre lies at Mobergsneset in Os, in Bjørnafjorden municipality south of Bergen. The initiative came in 2006 from Per Grieg senior, who wanted an art museum for the Grieg Foundation's art collection. The centre was officially opened on 17 June 2011 and became a multifunctional art and culture centre designed by Grieg Arkitekter, financed through a public-private partnership.
The Grieg Art Collection is shown in a 600-square-metre gallery with a glass façade facing Bjørnafjorden, Melderskin and Folgefonna. The collection consists of several hundred artworks, mainly by Norwegian artists, from the Golden Age of Norwegian painting (among them Christian Krohg, Frits Thaulow, Eilif Peterssen, Nikolai Astrup, Harald Sohlberg and Ludvig Karsten) to contemporary art. The collection is the core of the centre. In addition, Oseana has a culture hall, a restaurant and rooms for courses, conferences and parties. The operation is organised as a municipal enterprise (kommunalt foretak).
