About the museum
Fantoft stave church was built in Fortun in Sogn in the 1100s and enlarged several times, including with a tower at the west end. In 1883 the consul Fredrik Georg Gade bought the building materials, moved the church to his property at Fantoft in Fana and used it as a family chapel. The church is built in the traditional stave construction, with tall posts, and is decorated with dragon heads and carvings.
In June 1992 the church was set on fire and burned down, leaving only the foundation frame standing. It was rebuilt following the old drawings, using 350–400-year-old pine from Kaupanger, and the work was completed in 1997. The church was consecrated at the end of August that year. Only a wish stone (ønskestein) built into one of the walls and the altar cross are original.
The church lies in the forest in Fana, not far from Fantoft light rail stop, and is one of the most photographed motifs in Bergen.
