About the museum
Trondheim kunstmuseum has been a museum since 1997, but the history behind the collection is much longer. The main building in Bispegata by Nidaros Cathedral was designed by the architect Peter Daniel Hofflund and was completed in 1930 as an exhibition venue for the rapidly growing collection of Trondhjems kunstforening (Trondheim Art Society). The building received the Houens fonds diplom (Houen Foundation Diploma) in 1931. In 1986 an extension of 600 square metres in the atrium was completed, designed by Ola Steen Arkitektkontor and Svein Wolle, and it received the same award in 1991, which makes the building the only one in Norway to have won the prize twice.
The museum's collection has its emphasis in the Norwegian Golden Age, the interwar and post-war periods and contemporary art, with the main focus on the time after 1960. The exhibition programme combines the collection with contemporary art that unites international relevance with local art history.
In 2008 the museum opened a department at Nedre Elvehavn: the Håkon Bleken senter in Gråmølna, a steam mill from 1840 that later became a boys' school and served various public purposes, with a modern extension designed by Per Knudsen Arkitektkontor. Here the Kunstgaven Håkon Bleken (the Håkon Bleken Art Gift) and other exhibitions are shown. The museum is part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST).
