About the museum
Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum was founded in 1893 and immediately began collecting contemporary crafts and design. In the 1890s art nouveau and Japanese art were in fashion, and both fields have since been researched, supplemented and exhibited in the museum. The collection also includes older utility objects and crafts, from ancient oil lamps to baroque costumes and dragesølv (dragon silver).
Together with Norske Kunsthåndverkere and the decorative arts museums (kunstindustrimuseene) in Oslo and Bergen, the museum has been responsible for Norske Kunsthåndverkeres Fond since 1990, which purchases contemporary Norwegian crafts. In 2012 the museum became part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST). The collection consists of around 30,000 objects, which are continuously being catalogued and made available on Digitalt Museum.
From 1 February 2021 to 4 April 2025 the museum building in Munkegata was closed to the public because the building was in too poor a condition to house the collection, and the 30,000 objects had to be moved to external storage. In the meantime the museum showed exhibitions in other premises under the heading Nordenfjeldske Transitt. The building was partly reopened in April 2025.
