About the museum
The Documentation Centre of Deportations, Expulsions and Resettlements (Centrum Dokumentacji Zsyłek, Wypędzeń i Przesiedleń) was established on 1 March 2011 by the rector of the university which is now called the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków (UKEN; formerly the Pedagogical University). It grew out of projects on forced migration carried out since 2004 by the Students' Scientific Club of History. The Centre comprises a research unit, a museum, an archive and a library.
Its seat is Fort No. 52 and ½ N “Skotniki”, built in 1897–1898 by Austro-Hungarian engineers to a design by Emil Gologorski as part of the Kraków Fortress. During the German occupation it held Soviet prisoners of war who were building Stalag 369, of whom about 160 died. Since 2017 the fort has been owned by the university, and its external appearance has been reconstructed.
The Centre collects the testimonies of witnesses, souvenirs, documents and photographs concerning exiles to Siberia, people displaced by the Germans and people forcibly taken to work in the Third Reich. The fort houses a permanent multimedia exhibition, “Zesłani na Sybir. Losy polskich obywateli deportowanych w głąb Związku Sowieckiego w czasie II wojny światowej” (Exiled to Siberia. The Fates of Polish Citizens Deported Deep into the Soviet Union during the Second World War). The Centre also prepares exhibitions in the country and abroad, for example on Polish refugees in Tanzania, Polish children in Iran and Siberians around the world.
