About the museum
The museum's collections date back to 1865, when a Physiographic Commission (Komisja Fizjograficzna), gathering natural history specimens, was formed in the Kraków Scientific Society (Towarzystwo Naukowe Krakowskie). Later the collections were looked after by the Geological Department of the Academy of Learning (Dział Geologiczny Akademii Umiejętności), and from 1921 by the Natural History Museum of the PAU (Muzeum Przyrodnicze PAU).
After the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) was established in 1954, the collections went to the Geological-Stratigraphic Laboratory (Pracownia Geologiczno-Stratygraficzna), from which today's museum descends. The museum belongs to the Research Centre of the Institute of Geological Sciences PAN in Kraków.
The collections include palaeobotanical, palaeontological, mineralogical and lithological specimens – according to the museum around 100,000 items, among them holotypes described from, among others, the collection of Marian Raciborski, as well as 19th-century mineral collections of Antoni Waga and Ignacy Domeyko from South America. The museum also holds one of the largest meteorite collections in Poland.
The permanent exhibition presents the geological structure of the Kraków region and is intended for schools at all levels and for visitors without a professional connection to geology. The museum also runs educational classes, including the “Mikroświaty” (Microworlds) series.
