About the museum
Jan Matejko’s House in Kraków is a branch of the National Museum and a biographical museum in the painter’s family home, a former tenement house rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jan Matejko (1838–1893) was a painter, teacher, social activist and collector who campaigned for the protection of monuments. He is known for his large historical paintings, shown in the Sukiennice, and for portraits of family members and Kraków residents.
On the first floor the original interiors of the salon and boudoir have survived; they were the first to be opened to visitors. The bedroom with a blue vault decorated with stars belonged to the artist’s wife, Teodora. On the top floor the studio has been recreated with painting equipment and props, among them a large stuffed horse that Matejko used while working on his monumental canvases.
The house also shows the artist’s drawings and paintings, honorary diplomas, orders and other memorabilia of his public activity. The museum also holds sketches and designs for the polychromy of St Mary’s Basilica.
