About the museum

The Museum of Pharmacy in Kraków was founded in 1946. Its organiser and first director was Stanisław Proń, legal adviser and administrative director of the Kraków Regional Pharmacists’ Chamber. Initially the institution was located in a townhouse at ul. Basztowa 3, where it operated until the end of the 1980s. It was then moved to the renovated Kamienica Pod Świętą Teklą (House Under St Thecla) at ul. Floriańska 25, where it has been housed ever since as a museum of the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University.

The exhibition occupies all the rooms of the fourteenth-century townhouse, from the Gothic cellars through the ground floor, the first and second floors to the attic. The layout of the display reflects the former use of these spaces in the pharmacy: raw materials requiring darkness and dryness were stored in the cellars, and medicinal herbs were dried and stored in the attic.

The collections include baroque, Empire and Biedermeier pharmacy furniture, pharmacy vessels, including majolica ceramics from several European manufactories, historical plant, mineral and animal raw materials, pharmacy-themed signboards and stained glass, and pharmaceutical tools such as mortars, presses and herb cutters. The museum also has valuable prints and manuscripts, including a Greek-Latin edition of the works of Hippocrates, old pharmacopoeias and herbals.
