About the museum

The Dom Mikołaja Kopernika is a branch of the Regional Museum in Toruń (Muzeum Okręgowe w Toruniu). It opened in 1973 in two historic townhouses at ul. Kopernika 15/17. According to Toruń tradition, the great astronomer was born on this site, and the buildings once belonged to his family. They have late Gothic, Hanseatic architecture and have kept their medieval roof truss.

In 2017–2018 the house underwent a thorough modernisation. Today it combines the historic fabric of the townhouses with modern multimedia technology: a smartphone app, an audio guide, augmented reality, holograms, projections, VR goggles and a 3D cinema. The exhibition focuses on three themes: science past and present, the everyday life of a burgher family in a late medieval house, and the life and work of Mikołaj Kopernik.

A large part of the objects are finds from archaeological excavations in Toruń's Old Town and New Town, which made it possible to reconstruct the realities of burghers' lives. Visitors can also see the medieval roof truss, where a show of the starry sky takes place. The house also keeps the Kolekcja Kopernikanów (Copernicans Collection), begun with the collection of the photographer Janina Gardzielewska.
