About the museum
The Museum of Toys and Fairy Tales was founded by Katarzyna Wesołowska-Karasiewicz and her husband, who opened it in June 2013. Initially the museum was housed in a private flat in a historic townhouse on Bydgoska Street; in 2016 it moved to its present seat in a townhouse at Ducha Świętego 12, in the centre of Toruń’s Old Town.
The collections are a family collection gathered over three generations and comprise more than a thousand objects. The oldest exhibits date from the early 19th century and the youngest from the 1980s. They include wax, porcelain, papier-mâché, celluloid, plastic and rubber dolls from France, Germany and Poland, among them from the Kalisz factory of Adam Szrajer. There are also plush and sawdust-filled teddy bears, rocking horses, building blocks, including stone blocks from the Austrian firm Richter, lead soldiers, toy cars, games, model trains and dolls’ houses.
The exhibition is housed in a single room and is conceived as a story: the hosts guide visitors and tell the stories of individual toys. The museum also runs art workshops for organised groups.
