About the museum

The Muzeum Uniwersyteckie w Toruniu has operated since 2003 as an independent section of the University Library of Nicolaus Copernicus University. Like similar institutions around the world, it combines representative, museum, academic and educational functions, and its name stresses that it is not limited to the history of a single university.

The main focus of the collection is works by Polish artists who lived outside Poland in the 20th century; the collection now numbers more than 25 thousand objects. The museum also collects works by artists from Vilnius and Toruń, and evidence of the material history of science in Vilnius and Toruń, including historic research equipment.

The museum is housed in a building at Plac Rapackiego, the former Reichsbank building. The permanent exhibition “Skarby Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika” (Treasures of Nicolaus Copernicus University) shows selected most valuable collections of the university, from ancient ceramics to European painting and works from non-European cultures. Temporary exhibitions are also held alongside it.
