About the museum
The Muzeum Dom PRL-u w Toruniu (PRL House Museum in Toruń) opened on 1 May 2019 to show everyday life in the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). It first operated in a small premises near Toruń Miasto railway station and later moved to the Old Town of Toruń, to a building at ul. Mostowej 13.
The exhibition consists of six rooms furnished similarly to many flats from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The bathroom, kitchen, living room and other rooms hold documents, furniture, appliances, clothes and everyday objects, including washing tubs (balie), typewriters, telephone sets, televisions, wall units (meblościanki), a record player with records, radios, newspapers, postcards and crockery.
The visit is interactive: many exhibits can be touched or used, for example you can listen to records, type on a typewriter or play with an old telephone switchboard (centralka telefoniczna). The museum can be visited individually, and for groups it organises museum lessons with a guide and quizzes. Entries take place on the hour, and a visit lasts about 45 minutes.
