About the museum
The Muzeum Historyczno-Wojskowe (Historical and Military Museum) is run by the Fundacja Muzeum Historyczno-Wojskowe (Historical and Military Museum Foundation), registered in November 2010. The museum’s beginnings, however, date back to 2003, when a first modest exhibition was organised at I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Mikołaja Kopernika (I General Secondary School named after Nicolaus Copernicus) on the occasion of the Day of the Polish Underground State.
The museum is located in the cellars of the 19th-century school building at Zaułek Prosowy in Toruń. Its collections include military and wartime memorabilia from 1910 to the 1950s, with particular emphasis on the Second World War and on the German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag XX A, which operated in Toruń at that time.
From the start the institution has worked with young people and presents the history of Poland in an accessible way. Over time it went beyond the school walls, involving pupils and teachers from other Toruń schools. Historical re-enactments on the occasion of the Warsaw Uprising and the Day of the Polish Underground State have become a tradition, and pupils also record interviews with veterans.
