About the museum
The Muzeum Toruńskiego Piernika (Toruń Gingerbread Museum) has operated since 2015 as a branch of the Muzeum Okręgowe w Toruniu. It was created in cooperation with the Toruń gingerbread company Kopernik.
The seat is the building of the former gingerbread factory of Gustaw Weese at ul. Strumykowa, regarded as the oldest factory of its kind in Europe. The rooms present the history of gingerbread-making from the Middle Ages to the present: reconstructed ovens, raw materials and spices, a 19th-century shop and parlour, and the largest collection of wooden gingerbread moulds in Europe, dating from the 17th to the 20th century.
The exhibition is interactive and includes, among others, multimedia stations, a virtual dressing room in historic costumes, a gingerbread playground and a room of fairy tales and legends. Since 2018 the museum has had the Piernikowe laboratorium (Gingerbread Laboratory), where visitors can bake gingerbread themselves. The museum has received awards in museum competitions, including the Sybilla in 2016, and in 2017 it was among the honourees of the European Museum of the Year Award.
