About the museum
The Muzeum Miejskie w Jastrzębiu-Zdroju (Jastrzębie-Zdrój Municipal Museum) began operating on 1 January 2026 as a new municipal cultural institution. It replaced the Galeria Historii Miasta (City History Gallery), which had operated since 2002 within the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury (Municipal Culture Centre) and changed its premises several times: first a former crèche, then the Dom Zdrojowy (Spa House) and the Łazienki building, and from 2023 the former sanatorium of the Spółka Bracka. The gallery was closed on 28 February 2026, and the museum took over its permanent exhibitions.
The museum occupies two historic buildings in the heart of the former spa district. Łazienki III at ul. Witczaka were built in the mid-1920s as a natural healing establishment; after wartime damage they were restored in 1949, and in 1993 they were entered in the register of monuments. The former sanatorium of the Spółka Bracka at ul. 1 Maja was built in 1911 in the Swiss style and served for treatment and recreation for miners.
The exhibition tells of three pillars of the city’s identity: the tradition of the spa, the mining ethos and the legacy of Solidarity. The programme also includes temporary exhibitions, lectures, museum lessons and workshops for children and adults.
