About the museum
The Gdyńskie Muzeum Motoryzacji grew out of the private passion of Witold Ciążkowski, a collector of historic vehicles, and operates in an exhibition hall at ul. Żwirowa 2c in Gdynia-Cisowa. The museum explains its location through the history of the city: Gdynia developed together with motoring in the 1920s and 1930s, had its first petrol station as early as 1926, car showrooms, and the Ford representation for the whole of Poland.
The hall is designed as a cobbled street from the 1920s, and its walls form original façades of tenement houses from interwar Gdynia and Gdańsk, with authentic doors, windows and signs. On the mezzanine there is a café in period style and an archive of documents: engine diagrams, photographs from rallies and old road maps.
All the exhibits are authentic, have original parts and, according to the museum, remain in working order, so they take part in parades, films and wedding ceremonies. Less than half of the collection is open to visitors; the rest waits in storerooms, and the museum has announced a possible future move to a larger venue in the city centre (Śródmieście). Alongside the museum operates the Society of Lovers of Historic Vehicles (Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Pojazdów Zabytkowych), which runs an educational programme for Gdynia pupils.
