About the museum
The Navy Museum was established in Gdynia on 28 June 1953 and collects memorabilia connected with the history of the Polish Navy. The first exhibition was housed in a former villa by the beach, and in the open air there were displayed, among other things, guns from Hel and from the wreck of the mine-layer ORP Gryf. For a time the destroyer ORP Burza served as the museum ship, and from 1976 it was replaced by ORP Błyskawica.
The old museum building was closed in 1969 because of its poor technical condition. The present seat, shared with the Museum of the City of Gdynia, was opened on 28 November 2012. The new multimedia permanent exhibition “Mamy rozkaz Cię utrzymać…” (We Have Orders to Hold On to You…) opened on 28 November 2018, on the hundredth anniversary of the re-founding of the Polish Navy. It tells the story of its hundred years: from the organisation of the fleet and bases in Gdynia, Hel and Puck, through the wartime trials and the postwar and Stalinist periods, to the accession to NATO.
The collections include, among others, a 152 mm gun from the Laskowski battery, guns and a turret from submarines, and the only surviving example in the world of the German rocket-propelled BT 1000 bomb-torpedo. Outside, on an area of about 2,000 square metres, the Open-Air Exhibition of Naval Weapons and Armament is presented. Since 24 March 2025 visitors can also go on board the submarine ORP Sokół.
