Górnośląski Park Etnograficzny

Open-air museum in Silesian Park with the wooden rural architecture of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin, including historic churches and cottages moved from across the region.

Opening hoursAdmission 25 zł

About the museum

The first announcement of an open-air museum in Upper Silesia dates from 1928, when the conservator of monuments Tadeusz Dobrowolski planned to collect endangered wooden churches and other objects. In 1930 the first object was purchased, a manor granary from Gołkowice from 1688, and in the 1930s a wooden church from Syrynia from 1510 was erected in the park in Katowice.

After the war, in the 1950s, field research and the inventory of folk architecture began, in which 850 wooden objects were recorded. Subsequent designs, including the plans of 1962, envisaged a museum on 24 hectares with 67 objects, and in 1963 the location was changed to the north-western part of the Voivodeship Park of Culture and Recreation.

Today the museum presents historic cottages, farmsteads, churches and granaries from various parts of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin in the Silesian Park in Chorzów, as well as animals in the enclosures. It is a cultural institution of the Silesian Voivodeship self-government. Open-air events and educational activities take place on the site, and in the church from Nieboczów masses are celebrated during the season.
