About the museum
The Muzeum Powstań Śląskich (Museum of the Silesian Uprisings) was established by resolution of the Świętochłowice City Council of 18 July 2012, through the transformation of the existing Muzeum Miejskie (Municipal Museum). Its seat is the building of the former administration of the Donnersmarck estates at ul. Wiktora Polaka, erected in 1907 to a design by Emil and Georg Zillmann. Renovation and adaptation of the building began in 2013, and the museum was opened to visitors on 18 October 2014.
The institution is run jointly by the Gmina Świętochłowice and the Silesian Voivodeship. In 2018 it received the Wojciech Korfanty Award, and in 2019 the Silesian Juliusz Ligoń Award.
The multimedia permanent exhibition occupies the ground floor, the first and second floors and the mezzanine. It is arranged chronologically: it begins with an exhibition on Świętochłowice in 1919, leads through the subsequent Silesian Uprisings (1919–1921) and the plebiscite, and ends by showing the consequences of the division of Upper Silesia. Items from the former Municipal Museum were used in the interior design. The museum has a certificate as a venue friendly to people on the autism spectrum and offers a mobile app for independent visits.
