About the museum

The beginnings of museum activity in Siemianowice Śląskie date back to the 1960s, when the Towarzystwo Miłośników Siemianowic (Society of Friends of Siemianowice) began collecting memorabilia relating to the history of the town and caring for places of memory. After the refusal to set up a municipal museum, the Society established a regional room. In 1974, in the 18th-century granary belonging to the palace and park complex, the Miejska Izba Tradycji Ruchu Robotniczego i Perspektyw Miasta (Municipal Tradition Room of the Labour Movement and the Prospects of the City) was opened. In 1989 the Social Museum with the “Po Schodach” gallery was created, and in 1991 a resolution of the town council established the Muzeum Miejskie (Municipal Museum).

The museum now runs departments of history, ethnography and art, and an educational and promotional department. The historical collections include, among other things, documents linked to Wojciech Korfanty, memorabilia of the Gymnastic Society “Sokół” (Falcon), insurgent and scouting banners, and documents from the time of “Solidarność” (Solidarity). The ethnography department contains Silesian folk costumes, hand-decorated furniture, agricultural tools and household equipment from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the art department collects works by participants of the Siemianowice open-air art workshops.

In the granary you can see a permanent exhibition on the history of the town, a display of residential and farm interiors from the first half of the 20th century, and the exhibition CARBON – Skarby Silesii (Treasures of Silesia), devoted to coal and mining culture. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, museum lessons, lectures of the Muzealna Akademia Uniwersytetu III Wieku (Museum Academy of the University of the Third Age) and concerts.

Admission & discounts

Free admission: Admission to the museum is free on Sundays. Members of ICOM, museum employees and people with disabilities also enter free.

The guided-tour ticket costs PLN 8 (standard) and PLN 4 (reduced); tickets are bought at the museum's ticket office.
