About the museum
The residential house and stable building were erected in 1780 as half-timbered structures with a reed roof and a rye-straw ridge; they were built by the cloth-maker Franz Flickschuh. They are among the oldest buildings in Neuzelle and offer an insight into the life of the monastery's servants.
The special value of the house lies in its original fabric and the room layout preserved from the time of construction: it consists of a parlour-bedroom with a bed alcove, a workshop and a storeroom. In the centre lies the Black Kitchen (Schwarze Küche), where cooking was done over an open fire whose smoke rose to a chimney opening at the top; there are also timber beam ceilings.
Members of the association Strohhaus Neuzelle e. V. restored and furnished the house and run it as a museum farmstead of rural everyday culture, with household items and tools. Every year at Easter an egg collection is shown; in addition there are monthly readings and an Advent afternoon.
