About the museum
Mining in the Złoty Stok area has a tradition of many centuries; the oldest documented record dates from 1273, when Duke Henry IV Probus granted the Cistercians of Kamieniec Ząbkowicki a privilege to search for minerals. The mine reached its greatest prosperity in the 16th century, when it supplied a considerable part of the gold mined in Europe, and in 1507 the ducal mint was moved to the town.
In the 18th and 19th centuries mining focused mainly on arsenic. In 1900 a railway line was brought to Złoty Stok, and in 1907 an electric mine railway was put into operation. The works were closed in 1961–1962.
The underground “Kopalnia Złota” (Gold Mine) tourist route was opened on 28 May 1996. Today the complex comprises the underground route with a guide, the Medieval Mining Settlement (Średniowieczna Osada Górnicza), the Ochre Adit (Sztolnia Ochrowa) and the Museum of Mining and History of Złoty Stok, opened on 22 November 2013 in the former guildhall. Visitors can also take a boat ride along an underground corridor, pan for gold, mint coins and cast a golden ingot.
