About the museum
The gasworks in Paczków was ceremonially started on 31 December 1901; its construction cost 90 thousand German marks. Gas was used mainly for lighting the streets and for heating and cooking; in the 1930s around 700 household customers, almost 85 percent of households, were connected to it. The town suffered little during the war, so the gasworks and the municipal gas lighting were already working by mid-1945.
After the war the plant was successively part of the municipal enterprise and the gasworks in Nysa. As the coke-gas transmission network was extended, production gasworks were liquidated; in Paczków the last coke wagon was quenched with champagne on 15 July 1977. The facility was converted into a museum, whose organiser and patron is the Polish Gas Company (Polska Spółka Gazownictwa).
The exhibition occupies about 1,000 m² and includes the preserved technological line of coal gas production, including horizontal retort furnaces, gas purification equipment and a furnace with an exposed cross-section. The collection of over 600 gas meters, considered the largest in Europe, is displayed in the historic gasholder from 1902. The collections also include gas lamps and wall brackets, household appliances powered by gas, documents and old advertisements.
