About the museum
The Łowicki Park Etnograficzny (Łowicz Ethnographic Park) in Maurzyce is a branch of the Muzeum w Łowiczu (Łowicz Museum), located about 7 km from the town, in the gmina of Zduny. The idea of building an open-air museum of the Łowicz village was born at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, and the site was chosen in 1971, near the former main road from Warsaw to Poznań. In the second half of the 1970s a development plan was prepared for a plot of 17.67 hectares, which was verified at the end of the 1980s, when the open-air museum was intensively expanded. In 1996 the open-air museum and its individual buildings were entered in the register of monuments.
In line with the authors’ intention, the open-air museum shows traditional buildings from the historic Łowicz Duchy, inhabited by the Księżacy. It holds 42 residential, sacred and utility buildings, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, with interiors furnished with furniture, household items, agricultural tools, paintings and textiles. Wooden buildings of log construction, of the wieńcowa and sumikowo-łątkowa types, with four-slope thatched roofs predominate. The park presents two village layouts: an oval green (owalnica) with a central square, and a street village (ulicówka) with buildings on one side only.
Among the buildings a church from Wysokienice from 1758 and a presbytery from Pszczonów from the early 20th century stand out. In the neighbourhood of the open-air museum is the world’s first welded bridge. The institution organises outdoor events, including the Majówka w Skansenie (May Festival at the Open-Air Museum) and Łowickie Żniwa (Łowicz Harvest), as well as shows of the Łowicz wedding and workshops, for example baking bread in a bread oven.
