About the museum
The castle in Oporów was built in the first half of the 15th century by Władysław Oporowski, later Archbishop of Gniezno, of the Oporowski family of the Sulima coat of arms. It is a small late-Gothic defensive residence on an island surrounded by a moat, one of the few buildings of this type preserved in Poland. Around the rectangular courtyard stand a residential house, a tower and a bastion with a chapel, connected by a defensive wall. Over the following centuries the estate belonged, among others, to the Tarnowski, Sołłohub, Pociej and Orsetti families; in the 17th–19th centuries minor alterations were made, and in the first half of the 19th century a landscape park was laid out.
After the Second World War the castle complex became state property, and since 1949 it has housed a museum. From the start it presented residential interiors of various epochs. A thorough restoration in 1962–1965 restored the castle’s former splendour and brought valuable discoveries, including Gothic portals and polychrome ceilings from the 17th century.
In 1965 a new exhibition of manor interiors was opened, which has been constantly supplemented since then. It shows works of art and applied arts from the 16th to the early 20th century: portraits, textiles, faience, porcelain, glass, silver, pewter and ivory objects, old weapons and furniture. The museum is also the initiator of museums in Kutno – the Museum of the Battle of the Bzura and the Regional Museum.
