About the museum

The Accordion Museum in Kościerzyna is a branch of the Kościerzyna Land Museum named after Dr Jerzy Knyba (Muzeum Ziemi Kościerskiej im. dra Jerzego Knyby). The idea arose in 2009 in talks between the city authorities, the Kościerzyna Land Museum and the accordionist and collector Paweł Nowak from Sulęczyno, who had been gathering instruments from various parts of the world since 1999. The fittings of the new branch were partly financed by a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The museum opened on 16 November 2010 in the former Kościerzyna cultural centre at ul. Długa 31. The core of the exhibition is the private collection of Paweł Nowak, and the institution is the only museum in Poland devoted to accordions and one of three such museums in Europe.

Since January 2014 the collections have been presented on the ground floor of the former town hall at Rynek 9 in Kościerzyna. The museum runs museum lessons, guided tours for groups, the Kościerskie Warsztaty Akordeonowe (Kościerzyna Accordion Workshops) and other events connected with accordion music.
