About the museum

The museum is housed in a former Protestant church built in 1865 for a mainly German community of Prussian foresters, officials, teachers and craftsmen. The King of Prussia covered two thirds of the construction costs, and the initiator was the Kościerzyna county starost (starosta kościerski) Engler. The church was initially a branch of the parish in Kościerzyna; from 1887 Lipusz had its own Protestant parish. After 1919 and the migration of the population, the parish ceased to exist, and the tall church tower was demolished after 1945. The single-nave building with lancet windows is 22.9 m long and 8.5 m wide.

The Muzeum Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego (Museum of Rural Economy) was opened here in 2000 on the initiative of the Lipusz commune and the local branch of the Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko-Pomorskie (Kashubian-Pomeranian Association). The initiators were Marian Lemańczyk and Stanisław Lewna. Around four hundred exhibits have been collected, including old farm equipment (harrows, ploughs, steamers, chaff cutters, a flax hackle, harness parts), household furnishings (furniture, kitchen utensils, barrels, a wooden pump), a ladder wagon, sledges and a horse-drawn cart. Old Protestant gravestones are also on show, as well as collections transferred from the school’s memorial room (Izba Pamięci).

The exhibition presents the everyday life and work of the Kashubians of the Zaborze region inside the brick interior of the historic church.
