About the museum
Collecting in Kościerzyna goes back to the 1960s and is linked to Dr Jerzy Knyba, an ethnographer and history teacher. In 1963, on his initiative, a Regional Room and a National Memory Room were set up at the high school and were also open to visitors from outside the school. In 1992 the collections were shown in a permanent exhibition in the Kościerski Dom Kultury (Kościerzyna House of Culture).
After a thorough renovation of the town hall from 1843, which was entered in the register of monuments in 1998, the exhibition occupied its first and second floors. It opened on 17 July 2000, and a natural history department devoted to the fauna of the Kościerzyna Land was added to the existing departments. The museum was established by a resolution of the town council of 27 October 2006 and began operating as an independent cultural institution on 2 April 2007.
In 2009 the Skansen – Parowozownia Kościerzyna (steam locomotive depot) was incorporated into the museum as the Railway Museum, and in 2010 the Accordion Museum opened, the first institution in Poland devoted to this instrument. In 2018 the permanent exhibition in the town hall was expanded with an exhibition on people associated with the town, from Józef Wybicki to Primate Henryk Muszyński.
