About the museum

The Museum of Armed Struggle of the Żywiec Region is housed in a former German air-raid shelter from 1944. It was created on the initiative of the Lech Club of Friends of Polish Arms, with support from the city authorities, and opened on 14 May 2011. The institution operates at the Municipal Cultural Centre in Żywiec and was established as a museum by private individuals.

The exhibition is based on objects from private collections. It shows the participation of the people of the Żywiec region in armed conflicts of the 20th century, including the First and Second World Wars, the Polish–Bolshevik war and the Polish–Czechoslovak conflict. The German occupation of Żywiec and the surrounding area, the activities of independence organisations and partisan fighting are discussed in more detail.

The museum has also reconstructed the staff room of an officer of the Battalion of National Defence from the September Campaign.
