About the museum
The Muzeum Fotografii w Bydgoszczy (Photography Museum in Bydgoszcz) was established in 2004 on the initiative of former employees of the FOTON plants and Ryszard Chodyna, and the decision to create it was taken by the authorities of the Wyższa Szkoła Gospodarki. From 1925 Bydgoszcz was a city of photography: that year Marian Dziatkiewicz founded the Fabryka Płyt Fotograficznych ALFA (ALFA Photographic Plate Factory) at 3 ul. Garbary, one of the first photochemical plants in Poland. After the war the factory operated as the Bydgoskie Zakłady Fotochemiczne FOTON (Bydgoszcz Photochemical Works FOTON) until its bankruptcy in 2007.
The official opening of the museum took place on 23 November 2004, only five weeks after the first meeting of the organisers. The institution occupied rooms of the first Bydgoszcz location of ALFA, later moved to premises at ul. Królowej Jadwigi, and from 2020 has been at 52 ul. Karpacka. All the exhibits come from donations by the FOTON plant, the Technikum Fotochemiczne (Photochemical Technical School) and friends of photography, and many of them still work.
The museum cultivates the tradition of Bydgoszcz’s and Poland’s photochemical industry. Besides its collections, it runs photography exhibitions, the Bydgoska Akademia Fotografii (Bydgoszcz Photography Academy), courses, workshops and photography lessons, and research projects such as FOTON and Pozytyw.
