About the museum
The Museum of the Medical University of Gdańsk has operated since 2006 and collects and presents objects related to the history and traditions of the university since 1945. Initially it was subordinate to the Chair of the History and Philosophy of Medical Sciences, and since 2010 it has functioned as an independent unit. It is housed in the Atheneum Gedanense Novum building at al. Zwycięstwa 41/42.
The collections also include exhibits from the Faculty of Medicine of Stefan Batory University in Vilnius from 1919–1939, and objects related to the development of medicine in Gdańsk from the 16th century onwards. Among them are documents, books, medical and pharmaceutical equipment and other relics of material culture linked to the history of the university, medicine, pharmacy and science. Exhibits concerning recent history come from the collections of clinics and departments and from private individuals, current and former staff and graduates.
The museum presents a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions, runs museum lessons and publishes a bulletin. Online there are a virtual walk through the exhibition, a series of columns, ‘Tajemnice z muzealnej półki’ (Secrets from the Museum Shelf), and short films, ‘Przyszłość dzięki przeszłości’ (The Future Thanks to the Past), on the history of medicine.
