About the museum
The Museum of Geodesy and Cartography in Opatów (Muzeum Geodezji i Kartografii w Opatowie) was established in 2005 through cooperation between the Opatów District (Powiat Opatowski) and the Association of Geodetic and Cartographic Initiatives “Geocentrum”. It was set up in the seat of the District Starostwo (county office) in Opatów. In 2024 the museum was named after Eugeniusz Romer, a Polish geographer, cartographer and geopolitician.
The collection, which numbers nearly a thousand objects, includes theodolites, rangefinders, levels and stereoscopes, as well as devices for processing aerial photographs, among them a Wild A5 autograph, ordered from Switzerland before the war and delivered to Poland in 1945. Visitors can also see a large collection of cadastral and surveying maps and books, including maps from the time of the Russian partition and cadastral maps of the Republic of South Africa from the beginning of the 20th century.
The oldest map in the collection is an 18th-century plan of Krzyżtopór Castle (Zamek Krzyżtopór) in Ujazd. The exhibition is set up in rooms equipped with multimedia and in a retro-style office of a sworn surveyor. The museum also organises meetings and seminars on geodesy, cartography and the history of the Opatów Land.
