About the museum

The Muzeum Starożytnego Hutnictwa Świętokrzyskiego (Museum of Ancient Świętokrzyskie Ironworking) operates in Nowa Słupia at the foot of Łysa Góra, on the site of one of the largest metallurgical centres of barbarian Europe in the first centuries AD. Bloomery furnaces (piece dymarskie) were used here from the 1st to the 3rd century; traces of them in the form of large lumps of slag had already been noticed in the nineteenth century by Stanisław Staszic. Regular archaeological research was carried out from the 1950s under the direction, among others, of Mieczysław Radwan and Kazimierz Bielenin.

The museum was established in the 1960s and bears the name of Mieczysław Radwan. The new building was opened in December 2021; the institution is run jointly by the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship self-government and the gmina of Nowa Słupia.

The permanent exhibition tells the story of the ancient ironworkers, their work, the discoveries of archaeologists and what has survived of the old bloomery furnaces to this day. The museum also includes the Centrum Kulturowo-Archeologiczne (Cultural and Archaeological Centre), an open-air park with a reconstructed settlement, where the Dymarki Świętokrzyskie festival takes place every August.
