About the museum
The Muzeum Historyczne w Legionowie was established by resolution of the City Council on 28 June 2006. It was based on the Zbiory Historyczne Miasta Legionowo (Historical Collections of the City of Legionowo), which had operated at the city office since 10 November 2001. The museum is housed in a villa from the 1930s at ul. Mickiewicza 23, which is listed as a historic monument. In 2008 a modern exhibition pavilion was built next to it, in which archaeological collections were displayed.
The permanent exhibitions focus above all on the history of the town. In the pavilion, the exhibition “Dzieje Legionowa 1877–1990” (History of Legionowo), with 363 objects, was opened on Museum Night, alongside the exhibition “De Profundis… Archeologia ziem powiatu legionowskiego” (Archaeology of the Legionowo District), which presents finds from a cemetery of the Przeworsk culture. Since 2012 the villa has housed an exhibition on the polar explorers and writers Alina and Czesław Centkiewicz, honorary citizens of the town.
The museum also has a branch, “Piaski”, in the former officers’ casino at Al. Sybiraków 23, where the exhibition “Dzieje Garnizonu Legionowo. Czas wojen i pokoju” (History of the Legionowo Garrison. Time of War and Peace) shows more than 270 memorabilia from the garrison’s 120-year history. The museum runs educational activities and an oral history archive, and offers an online audio guide.
