About the museum

The first exhibits of the future museum began to be collected at the end of the 1920s, when priests of the Polish province of the Congregation of the Mission (Zgromadzenie Misji) left for missions in China. Between 1929 and 1948 around forty members of the congregation worked there, mainly in the Shuntefu and Wenchow provinces. The missionaries sent objects to Poland to convey the culture and religion of that country, and in the 1930s a mission museum was created from their collections. It operated until the outbreak of the Second World War.

After the war, for lack of a suitable space, the institution was closed. It was reopened in 1995, after the library was moved to new premises. Alongside the mission souvenirs, relics from the missionaries’ house on Stradom were also displayed at that time.

The historical section includes paintings, among them three early Renaissance epitaphs painted in tempera on wood, a portrait of King Stefan Batory from 1583, and goldsmiths’ work – chalices, monstrances and reliquaries, including Vincentian ones. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions.
